thinspiration

By Julia Gumm On April 24th, Penn State student Torri Singer began a petition on Change.org to “restrict use of thinspiration language and hashtags circulating the twittersphere.” If you are blessed enough to not know what thinspiration (also known as “thinspo”) is, let me fill you in. Thinspo is an assortment of tips, tricks, diaries and photos all geared to inspire the reader to forgo eating like a normal human being in favor of attaining anorexic-style slimness. Many online thinspiration presences are blatant in their pro-disordered attitudes (known as pro-ana (anorexia) or pro-mia (bulimia) to those in the know). More alarming though, is the thinspiration that poses as reasonable weight loss advice, but is nothing more than an how-to on starvation and image-obsessed behavior. While I applaud the intentions of… Read more »

The Best Way To Minimize Trouble Spots

minimize trouble spots

By Julia Gumm What’s that one part of your body you hate? Oh come on, I know you have one. For me, it’s always been my arms. Sure, I have issues with my tummy, my chin, my eyelashes…but really, the problem is my arms. Not willowy nor cut, these babies are chubby. They were chubby when I lifted weights. They were chubby when I did a ton of cardio. They were chubby when I did a ton of drugs. Chub-E (cottage) Cheeses. It seemed that no matter how many tricep kick backs Denise Austin chirped me through, I always had that unsightly jiggle when I waved goodbye. That’s what she always pointed to as an incentive to stick with her program- not having that kind of epic disaster wreck your… Read more »

Slim for Life By Jillian Michaels Review

Jillian Michaels Slim for Life Review

When I released Diet Recovery 2 (99 cents until midnight tonight on Amazon), I had no idea that Jillian Michaels, the devil diet diva herself, would be releasing a book on the exact same day – her new testament of health holiness, Slim for Life.  As you can go ahead and assume, it indeed brought me great joy to see my book edge ahead of hers in the rankings.  But I thought taking the time to read (skim) her new book and write a short review here would bring me, and you, even more joy.  In the beginning of Slim for Life I remained optimistic.  She reminded me much of myself in the beginning of my health exploits, going on and on about eating unprocessed foods and abusing the word “crap” as an adjectified noun… Read more »

By: Julia Gumm When I was but a wee lass, at the dewey age of sweet sixteen, I went to see my doctor. Nothing was the matter, I was perfectly healthy, I just needed to get a physical for my driver’s license. The exam was moving along just fine until I got onto the scale. At 5’4″, I weighed in at 136 pounds, a result that yielded an unsurprised yawn from me. With the exception of that one zany summer when I decided that subsisting on a single sleeve of Saltines per week was a good idea, my post-pubescent weight had hovered steadily around the 140 mark, and I was pretty sure I looked fine.* I was very active. My family was piss-poor so there was no computer or video… Read more »

Barbie… The Truth Behind the Beauty

barbieanorexic

I was perusing the kid aisles at Target today with a 7-year old.  She loves Barbie.  We strolled down the aisle, just the two of us.  She mentioned her love of Barbie.  I asked her if she wanted to know a little secret about Barbie.  She said yes.  I told her Barbie makes herself throw up after everything she eats and that her teeth fell out from all the barf acid.  It went way over her head, like most things I say.  I didn’t really say it for her amusement anyway.  There was a decent looking girl within earshot.  But the experience reminded me of all the inside information that I have about Barbie that few others possess.  Today… I tell all. Yes it’s true.  Barbie’s teeth were worn down… Read more »

HYPERchondriac

I came across this term recently and almost fell out of my chair laughing. I think I was in a chair when I read it. Maybe I was laying down. Anyway, when I read the word it struck me. It sums up so many different phases that I’ve been through and countless delusions of low-carbers, vegans, and all kinds of health fanatics on the internet and in the real world. When I saw the word and its meaning set in, it was as if, in the words of Will Ferrell’s character “Brennan” in the movie Step Brothers, “a lightning bolt hit the tip of my penis.” You see the term “hypochondriac” floating around all over the place. There is even a new term referred to as “cyberchondria,” defined at Wikipedia… Read more »

The Bulimia Bandit

Posted

Matt Stone stars in this short, heartwarming, and mildly-offensive film – The Bulimia Bandit.  Stone is cast in the leading role as the Bulimia Bandit himself – a masked hero that travels the world fighting women’s hate crimes against themselves.  Although not shown, Stone has many magical powers including the ability to turn soy products, salad, laxatives, fingers, and meal replacement shakes into Strawberry ice cream.  Stone’s nemesis is Jenny Craig.  His weakness is that, without carbohdyrates, he turns to the dark side.  Although never shown to conceal his identity, Stone’s superhero attire is a full body latex suit patterned after Stone’s favorite childhood superhero, Condorman (shown left).  It is fully equipped with an emergency orange juice tank, wings, and special jet-boots that enable him to fly from refrigerator to refrigerator - fully protected from ketosis and spillage from various toxic sludges, including Diet Coke, Slim Fast shakes, Skim or… Read more »

The New Eating Disorders

orthorexia

By Matt Stone Not too long ago a new type of eating disorder was added to the big 2, anorexia and bulimia. This new one is referred to as orthorexia, which is, in a nutshell, having an irrational infatuation with healthy eating. Of course all the health authors and bloggers out there cried out as if this were some kind of conspiracy to keep people from making healthy food choices. Maybe that has something to do with it, maybe not. Alex Jones certainly whipped up a fuss over the new term, but then again, Alex Jones whips up a fuss over pretty much everything (which incidentally makes him pretty entertaining at times). But at 180D, we know all too well that there is definitely a such thing as orthorexia, and… Read more »
