By Julia Gumm Coming to terms with human nature in the 21st century is no straightforward task. We are equipped with the most primitive of biologies, a physiology that compels us to do two things: Survive and spread our genes. But teetering o’er top that eatin’, sleepin’ and er, copulatin’ machine, there balances an extremely sophisticated control center. It’s complex enough to get us interested in things like algebra and ethics, and when surveying the two dimensional desires of the hulking load of anatomy it hauls around, is led to beg the question “Is this really all there is?” Consideration of the answer to that query can lead to attempts to complicate what otherwise appears to be far too mundane of a purpose for superior beings such as ourselves. When… Read more »

Stress and Metabolism Webinar
By Matt Stone Lianda Ludwig – some of you who participate on the 180D facebook page might recognize her name, has stuck with some of the basic principles of this site for quite a while. It was tough going at first. It’s hard to eat enough food to raise your metabolism and function well when it just sits there like a friggin’ rock. But eventually her metabolism rose, her health returned, her gastroparesis vanished, and her body fat levels reached their peak and have now started slowly falling. This is always nice to hear, but even nicer to know that a woman over 60 years of age can even pull it off successfully. Anyway, she has a lot of lessons from this experience to share and is hosting a webinar on stress, metabolism,… Read more »

Happiness and Weight Loss
By Julia Gumm I was in a wedding once. The bride was a pushy sort, not exactly a “bridezilla”, but she wanted all the details of her special day to be in order as soon as possible. Among other things, that meant that I had to be fitted for my bridesmaid’s dress about a year before the ceremony. Now, I’m not one of those people who walks the earth taking up the same precise amount of space from season to season, year to year, know what I mean? The bride, knowing this as well as I did, hissed at me between gritted teeth “Now don’t you go losing a bunch of weight or something!” Well, when the anticipated date arrived, I found that there was a lot more dress to… Read more »
Fat Is Officially Incurable Response
By Rob Archangel, 180DegreeHealth.com staff writer Hey crew, Rob here with my first post at 180 Degree Health. A couple times in the last few days, I’ve had the chance to articulate my thoughts around obesity. One of them was the highly trafficked Cracked.com article Fat is Officially Incurable (According To Science). Vigorous debate rages there and on the 180D Facebook page, and I’ve participated some. I thought I might try to consolidate some thoughts here, in question and answer format. What is obesity and is it dangerous? Technically, it’s having a BMI (body mass index) over 30. It’s not necessarily bad for you. In some cases, it’s protective as we age. On an individual level, health and obesity are not the same. You can be fat and fit, or… Read more »
2011 New Year’s Resolutions: Lose Weight!
Along the same lines as the last blog post – a long-winded and passionate article on getting beyond the pathological fixation on weight, diet, and body image issues affecting modern humans to an unacceptable degree, here is an audio program encouraging you to not TRY to lose weight as a New Year’s Resolution. The focus of any New Year’s Resolution should be making a resolution to spend more time doing what you find to be the most fulfilling, satisfying, and enjoyable things in life – establishing a healthy relationship with food and exercise in a way that supports those endeavors instead of functioning as a major distraction, and just letting go and letting the pounds fall where they may. Enjoy, and feel free to pass it along to anyone you know whose… Read more »
Channeling Jon Gabriel
I finally got around to reading Jon Gabriel’s The Gabriel Method earlier this month. Although it might lean a little too heavily towards the meditation/positive thinking/woo-woo side of things for most, and Gabriel is more excited about flax and fish oil than Barry Sears himself, I will go out on a limb and call it one of the best weight loss books in print. It is more in alignment with 180DegreeHealth on the topic of weight loss than practically anything out there. It’s about eating well. Eating MORE real food. Eating to appetite. Being in general harmony with your body. Not eating an overly restricted diet. Gabriel also feels strongly that restricted dieting is a prime contributor to long-term weight gain – and is NOT the solution in any shape, form, or fashion. According to… Read more »
