All Natural Thinking

A golden rule that I lived by for years served me in many ways. That rule was that if a food was natural and produced without newfangled chemicals, additives, and modern food processing techniques, then it was unquestionably nourishing and could be part of a wholesome, healthy lifestyle. To me this was a panacea of sorts. If I followed this rule, then I could be confident of the best health that I was capable of achieving, or so I thought. The reason I’m addressing this notion is because I frequently encounter people with the same exact mindset. When I tell them that for the most part I avoid fruit, natural sweeteners like organic raw honey, etc. it’s obvious that this doesn’t fit into their own personal philosophy. These real foods,… Read more »

Plower vs. Force

What

There are two distinct paths to proper weight management. One is to be a “plower” who mows down large quantities of nutritious unprocessed food, never skipping meals or watching portion size. The other way is through force – exercising extremely hard and eating so little that the body cannot slow down its metabolism enough to keep body weight from dropping. One of these routes is fully sustainable and keeps the physical/mental/emotional body balanced, strong, resistant to both chronic and infectious disease, etc. The other route is a one-way ticket to bone and hair loss, physical injury, a compromised immune system and the fun that comes along with it, erratic moods, and a damaged metabolism resulting in the eventual inability to eat normal amounts of food without blowing up like a… Read more »

Oops I Did It Again Part I

Many people experience things as truth, the gospel, and then stick to it no matter what. Like my favorite comedy rant of all time by Stephen Colbert (who usually isn’t that funny), many people, like presidente W, “believe the same thing on Wednesday that he believed on Monday: no matter what happened on Tuesday.” Well, my fad beliefs come and go with relative ease, and much humility. I change my “absolute truths” more in a given year than most people do in a lifetime. It uh, has its advantages and disadvantages. In short, I’m starting what will inevitably be an ongoing series (if the future is anything like the past), called “Oops I did it Again.” The purpose is to quickly and efficiently expose something I held as the gospel… Read more »

Sugarpie Honeybuns

There is perhaps no hotter topic in nutritional spheres than blood sugar regulation. Although you may have not been diagnosed with any kind of blood sugar regulation deficiency, to a degree your system has been altered if you’ve grown up on typical refined foods like white flour, white sugar, soft drinks, caffeine, candy, etc., which, if you’re technologically advanced enough to be reading this, you probably have. Nearly everyone suffers from drops in blood sugar to varying degrees. If you exercise intensely and find yourself weak, dizzy, exhausted, shaky, and ravenously hungry, then your body has failed to maintain its proper blood sugar levels. If you get a little light headed and weak if you’ve gone for many hours without food, your body has failed to maintain its proper blood… Read more »

Dieter’s Dilemma

At my place of work/lounge n’ read, the topic of weight loss is well, prevalent let’s say. Sometimes I mention to customers that “x” weight loss product is our best selling item, and that we sell more of it than any other product for any other purpose. Most people snicker and say, “well, has anybody ever heard of putting less food in their mouths!” or “it’s called eat less and exercise more, duh.” Weight loss sure sounds simple. All you have to do, according to these very sure people, is exercise more and eat less. Hey, what is the track record of this plan anyways? More Americans are significantly overweight than at any point in history. The human race is fatter than it’s ever been in history. If a study… Read more »

The 10-Week Transformation Project

10 week diet plan

This is the first official call for a group of volunteers willing to follow a simple set of dietary guidelines for a period of 10 weeks. I know that the nutritional principles are sound, and I’ve put all of the following concepts to use in my own life with great success, but I’m curious to see if it’s “that simple” for others. To join the group you can live anywhere on earth but you must: 1) Be overweight.2) Not be too physically active.3) Have a history of dieting, calorie restriction, lowfat/carb attempts or both, etc.4) Have a moderate list of physical “imperfections,” such as low energy, sporadic changes in blood sugar levels, headaches, bladder/prostate issues, sexual dysfunction or infertility, PMS, hot flashes or other menopausal symptoms, chronic ailments, frequent infections,… Read more »

Postnatal Essentials

New mothers are faced with a difficult challenge. On one hand there is an immediate desire to lose fat and restore vigor and physical appearance. On the other, there is an essential need for nursing mothers to eat an abundance of nutritious foods to make sure breast milk is rich and nourishing for the infant. Although this task is simple and easy, when books, doctors offices, universities, magazines, and television are saturated by misinformation ranging from partial truth to absurdity, it becomes quite a difficult task. The fact that nearly every American has nutritional deficiencies in varying degrees, particularly menstruation-aged women and pregnant and nursing mothers, the need for proper nutrition is desperately needed. To restore vibrant health while supplying an abundance of nutrients to your child, it is mandatory… Read more »
