By: Danny Roddy; author of The Peat Whisperer Matt Stone and I have a lot in common: we both hate that sleepy-eyed bozo from Coldplay, we both had a crush on Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes from TLC, and we both agree that not since Wiene’s ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ has there been a film as important as Bay’s ‘Transformers II: Revenge of The Fallen.’ In addition to the above, we were both convinced early on that the metabolic rate (as defined by body temperature and pulse) was a compelling factor in health. Well, Matt was convinced before I was, and Dude probably saved my life by introducing me to the potato, but I digress. I credit Matt for turning me onto the relationship between the metabolic rate, the thyroid… Read more »
By Rob Archangel, 180DegreeHealth.com staff writer Anyone you know have a thyroid condition like Hasimoto’s thyroiditis? Matt’s got a new post over at Outsmart Disease answering some questions about enhancing the metabolism and losing weight for folks with those conditions. As many of you know, though, functional hypothyroidism (or “Type 2 Hypothyroidism,” in the language of endocrinologist Mark Starr) is widely common, and even those without specific thyroid-related diagnoses can see benefit from raising their metabolism and enhancing their thyroid function. As he mentions in the interview, his recommendations and goals tend to be similar since the benefits of having a robust metabolism apply to all, and can be both therapeutic and preventative. So mosey on down to Marina’s site there, and check out Matt’s interview here.
By Rob Archangel, 180DegreeHealth.com staff writer Hey crew, Rob here with my first post at 180 Degree Health. A couple times in the last few days, I’ve had the chance to articulate my thoughts around obesity. One of them was the highly trafficked Cracked.com article Fat is Officially Incurable (According To Science). Vigorous debate rages there and on the 180D Facebook page, and I’ve participated some. I thought I might try to consolidate some thoughts here, in question and answer format. What is obesity and is it dangerous? Technically, it’s having a BMI (body mass index) over 30. It’s not necessarily bad for you. In some cases, it’s protective as we age. On an individual level, health and obesity are not the same. You can be fat and fit, or… Read more »
Many people will answer this question with a simple “NEVER,” but the more you study and tinker with the human body the more you realize that there is a lot more going on than can be explained with a simple nutrition-centric view of health. By junk food I mean basic, standard, yummy stuff. Breakfast classics like french toast, waffles, pancakes, and pastries. Snacks like chips and cheese and crackers. Lunch bombs like cheeseburgers and fries or pizza. Dinners like pot pie, pasta, or what have you. Drinks like bubbly soda, lemonade, chocolate milk. And rich desserts like ice cream, cheesecake, cookies, and pie. This is what I’m talking about when I say “junk foods.” What I should really say is, “the yummiest stuff.” So when can the yummy stuff actually be used as a… Read more »
“Now that our public health establishment has eliminated smoking from public places, maybe they can find a way to reduce stress and disease by removing morons from positions of power.” ~Ray Peat Not sure what that first quote has to do with the thyroid exactly, but it is awesome. Dr. Ray does coincidentally rhyme with Dr. Dre. He sounds pretty gangsta in that quote. Check yo’self fools! If you had to summarize Peat’s primary objective in terms of his anti-aging, health problem management strategy – it would be to maximize what to him is a true evolutionary advancement – a high thyroid-generated metabolism (as opposed to like, a high amphetamine metabolism). This, in and of itself, would eliminate many health problems. But because of the thyroid hormones’ basic properties, they… Read more »
“Their metabolism is so slow that they may take a half a minute to move a leg a few inches. Their digestive system is so slow that they need only defecate about once a week. They even sneeze slowly.” http://www.zootorah.com/ Some people still don’t get it. When I say “it” I mean the centrality of a high cellular metabolic rate in disease prevention, body composition, and overcoming many common health problems big and small as discussed in how to RAISE YOUR METABOLISM. Big names in “alternative nutrition” like Mark Sisson and Joel Fuhrman, who make relatively sound general dietary prescriptions (eat nutritious foods at the exclusion of most junk), have both negated the importance of metabolism – and even believe it’s good to have a low metabolism. Everyone else shrugs… Read more »
Although the sound quality is less than spectacular – I was in a room full of “moo-shine” filled refrigerators, here is a large chunk of a talk I gave to a local group of real foodies in Sarasota on Tuesday. Nothing earth-shattering, but unlike Uncle Rico’s flippin’ sweet play action QB video in the movie Napolean Dynamite, it hopefully won’t make you say ”this is pretty much the worst video ever made.” Some of you may recognize the Weston A. Price Foundation reading material on the wall beside me, as this was put on by Sarasota-area WAPF chapter leader Cynthia Calisch. Topics include metabolism, raising body temperature, overcoming insulin resistance, and the potential benefits of a diet very low in omega 6 polyunsaturated fat. Please be sure to stir up controversy on my alleged identity as frequent commentor… Read more »
The following is a guest post by health and fitness professional Cassandra Damiris. Sandra contacted me many months ago when she decided to fully embark upon RRARF. She followed the guidelines religiously, had a big rise in body temperature and many health improvements, and has since lost her excess body fat (mostly through Intermittent Fasting) without any damage to her large body temperature gains. The following article puts RRARF into the context of balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic Nervous Systems. Big thanks to Cassandra!!! Her contact information is at the end of this post. I’ve been a fan… Read more »
As many of you know, over the last couple of months we’ve been exploring a diet that displaces more fat with starch as opposed to eating more or less equal amounts of the two. When it comes to lowering cortisol, improving leptin sensitivity, improving insulin sensitivity, impoving body composition, raising metaoblism, and keeping fat gain minimal while eating to appetite or slightly beyond appetite – which are basically the objectives of the eating and lifestyle program created in the eBook DIET RECOVERY, starch immediately stands out as being superior to fat in each and every one of those categories. And of course, the vast majority of the most metabolically-healthy people on earth eat what could be called a “starch-based diet” in which well over half of ingested calories come from some starchy… Read more »
The free eBook I’ve been promising for a couple months is finally available. It’s a great introduction to my conclusions thus far and the latest and most precise direction on how to raise your metabolism/increase body temperature to date. Most of you received e-mail notification already, although my e-mail service does have a high failure rate – so many who have subscribed to the mailing list at www.180degreehealth.com may have not received it. If that’s the case – send me an e-mail at sacredself@gmail.com and I’ll send a link to the file right back. For those who haven’t subscribed at www.180degreehealth.com please take a moment to do so and you will receive the link immediately. Now everybody go read it and we’ll get a little Q and A going in the comments section here. Look… Read more »
When I say “advantages of raw milk” I don’t mean advantages over pasteurized milk. I’m talking about overfeeding with raw milk, and what the potential advantages may be of a milk diet vs. a mixed, whole foods diet used specifically for overfeeding and stimulating the metabolism. Advantages include: 1) Milk is 100% raw, with lots of digestive enzymes including lipases, lactase, and proteases which assist in full assimilation of the milk. 2) Raw milk doesn’t contain trace amounts of harmful substances found in cooked foods, like lipid peroxides, heterocyclic amines, and polycyclic whatchamacallits 3) Raw milk contains nutrients that may be destroyed by cooking in other foods, such as heat-sensitive vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), thought to be one of the most lacking and important nutrients in the Western world. 4) Milk wants… Read more »
Hey guess what? I’m a little tired of writing right now. I was going to try to bust out the free eBook as promised at the mother site (intended to be the overfeeding Bible with the working title: RRARF! Medical Applications of Overfeeding), but that’s shaping up to be a May project. I just don’t think I can pull it off this month. Instead, I’m going crazy with videos and blogs after a pretty long siesta. Hey, I feel like talking and cooking after writing a 60,000 word book in 5 weeks. Strange I know. Anyway, that’s enough of that. This week’s featured videos include: A video on 180 Degree Metabolism for those who won’t be able to read the book. In the video I lay out the general premise… Read more »
Well, it’s officially done, and was no small feat. 146 pages of good lovin’ – the new 180 Degree Metabolism: The Smart Strategy for Fat Loss. Why “strategy?” Well, cuz you don’t rush into the “fat loss phase.” You get “primed” first. But ultimately I do believe that raising the body temperature first (restoring leptin sensitivity) will be the key. It will be what triggers the body to “allow” fat to be released without the typical famine response seen in every weight loss ward in which overweight and obesity has been studied. Personally, I’m down 7.5 pounds on the year so far, all of it fat – and not only is my body not revolting to the weight loss, I actually seem to be picking up steam. Hunger is absent, and no signs of the metabolism… Read more »
