Are White Flour and White Sugar bad for you?

white flour white sugar

By Matt Stone The slow trickle of books in an increasing number of formats continues. That latest is the revised version (put out in September) of the original Diet Recovery now in paperback. You can order that on Amazon HERE. It’s also available as an audiobook in case you missed that announcement as well. Click HERE to listen. I originally wrote Diet Recovery with a belief that a diet containing refined foods stripped of their nutrients, namely white flour and sweeteners like white sugar and high-fructose corn syrup even more so, was inherently unhealthy. I thought these substances were the primary cause of health problems in the world, and their removal from the diet absolutely mandatory to improve one’s health. At the same time, my research was leading me towards the… Read more »

Eating Disorder Recovery

This is a quick follow-up post to my last article on the big fat loss secret.  After a full year of doing a great deal of one-on-one phone conversations, I keep wanting to share some of the calls.  I get some really interesting cases, and I often find myself wanting to start recording some of the really good calls and publish them for a general audience to listen to.  They really are that interesting, and the lessons often strongly reiterate some of the basic messages of 180DegreeHealth.  I haven’t recorded any calls yet, and I don’t know if that’s something I’ll actually do, but I thought I could at least share some of the things that I discussed with Coldmember – a 20-year old Dutch kid that ran into serious health trouble after pursuing extreme body composition… Read more »

Intermittent Feasting, Vegas Style

BellagioBuffet

By Rob Archangel, 180DegreeHealth.com staff writer This past week, I had the chance to make a trip out to Las Vegas, and what better place than the buffet capital of the world to document my ongoing experiment in intermittent fasting/feasting. As some of you know, I’ve been working with Chief, learning his methods of health and body recomposition for the last several months.  While I won’t get into too much detail on the specifics of his program for me (that’ll come further down the line once I feel confident in reporting conclusions), I did want to throw together this post just to share and document what sort of foods a ROK-star might eat. Before I left, Chief suggested that I eat absolutely intuitively on the trip, to go to buffets… Read more »

Free eBook

dietrecovery

The email I get most often is one inquiring about the “free ebook.”  In October of 2011, the free ebook that I used to give away was revised, expanded into a full-length book, and released as Diet Recovery: Restoring Hormonal Health, Metabolism, Mood, and Your Relationship with Food.  There is also now a Diet Recovery 2. This book lays out all of the major concepts regarding the health issues that can stem from an impaired metabolism, how the metabolism becomes impaired in the first place, and clear instructions on the most high percentage methodology (without drugs or supplements) for raising metabolic rate back to normal and beyond. I decided to do this post for those searching for information about the free ebook at 180DegreeHealth.  You can read more about Diet Recovery HERE … Read more »

Public Talk in Sarasota

Posted

Although the sound quality is less than spectacular – I was in a room full of “moo-shine” filled refrigerators, here is a large chunk of a talk I gave to a local group of real foodies in Sarasota on Tuesday.  Nothing earth-shattering, but unlike Uncle Rico’s flippin’ sweet play action QB video in the movie Napolean Dynamite, it hopefully won’t make you say “this is pretty much the worst video ever made.”  Some of you may recognize the Weston A. Price Foundation reading material on the wall beside me, as this was put on by Sarasota-area WAPF chapter leader Cynthia Calisch.  Topics include metabolism, raising body temperature, overcoming insulin resistance, and the potential benefits of a diet very low in omega 6 polyunsaturated fat.  Please be sure to stir up controversy on my alleged identity as frequent commentor… Read more »

Balancing the Nervous System with Cassandra Damiris

Posted

The following is a guest post by health and fitness professional Cassandra Damiris.  Sandra contacted me many months ago when she decided to fully embark upon RRARF.  She followed the guidelines religiously, had a big rise in body temperature and many health improvements, and has since lost her excess body fat (mostly through Intermittent Fasting) without any damage to her large body temperature gains.  The following article puts RRARF into the context of balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic Nervous Systems.  Big thanks to Cassandra!!!  Her contact information is at the end of this post.  To enlarge any of the images below, simply click on them… If this is your first time reading the 180 Degree Health Blog, then I’m honoured that the first post you’re seeing is one of mine. I’ve been a fan… Read more »

Ending Emotional Eating

Posted

First of all, man am I glad to be back home. New York City was awesome this trip, and I’ll be writing about my food adventures there at http://180kitchen.wordpress.com/ very soon. But all in all it felt like a competition to see how much caffeine, alcohol, sugar, nitrates, and vegetable oil I could get into my system. I’m more than ready for a breather from that. I’ve never been so glad to see ground beef, coconut oil, sweet potatoes, and spinach. In fact, the burger I ate for breakfast this morning was so large I started singing “Everybody Wants Some.” I actually filmed it below. Any resemblance to a young John Cusack is purely coincidental. Anyway, time to discuss what is a huge and extremely prevalent problem in the modern… Read more »

RRARF Addendum

Posted

As many of you know, over the last couple of months we’ve been exploring a diet that displaces more fat with starch as opposed to eating more or less equal amounts of the two.  When it comes to lowering cortisol, improving leptin sensitivity, improving insulin sensitivity, impoving body composition, raising metaoblism, and keeping fat gain minimal while eating to appetite or slightly beyond appetite – which are basically the objectives of the eating and lifestyle program created in the eBook DIET RECOVERY, starch immediately stands out as being superior to fat in each and every one of those categories. And of course, the vast majority of the most metabolically-healthy people on earth eat what could be called a “starch-based diet” in which well over half of ingested calories come from some starchy… Read more »

The Catecholamine Honeymoon

Posted

point-break-copy

This post could be titled any number of things. Originally I had thought to call it Low Carb Honeymoon, as I have referred to that window of amazing energy and effortless, lean-tissue sparing fat loss experienced by many on their first flirtation with carbohydrate restriction. But carbohydrate restriction is really just one way of achieving an adrenal hormone buzz that provides unfathomably good results in the short-term while mysteriously disappearing later on.  Another is rigorous exercise. Another is fasting or intermittent fasting. Then you have just plain calorie restriction – which usually feels awesome and invigorating before the crash landing. Stimulants will do the trick as well. Ephedra was an amazing supplement for many people from what I understand. A happily-ever-after? I don’t think so. Each of these techniques or… Read more »
