Adrenal Fatigue: Getting Back to Basics

Adrenal Fatigue Sugar

By Julia Gumm Adrenal Fatigue is one of those shadowy - is it real or isn’t it, kind of dis-eases that sort of hangs around the periphery of medicine. Sure, it’s often an accessory to the crimes of high blood pressure, back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia and allergies- but for some reason, doctors are loathe to pin the patsy on these inconspicuous perps. Nope, they’re off the hook. Sweet deal the adrenals have, unless they’re all in on the crime, they get away scot free. Blame the pancreas, blame the heart, blame the immune system! Don’t blame us! Nothin’ to see here but us chickens! Or uh, glands! So that’s how come you can show up at your doctor’s office with a laundry list of symptoms- weak ankles and knees, muscle aches,… Read more »

Migraines and Vertigo from Overhydration

migraine-headache-01

By: Joni Cox from Homegrown Health Two years ago, if you would have told me I may have a brain tumor, I would have likely believed you. The pain from the frequent migraines was so intense, that I would often have no choice but to surrender to them, hoping that my head wouldn’t explode. I usually have a high pain tolerance and could work through any migraine, as long as it was only on one side of my head. But when both sides were affected and throbbing, my ability to cope, resist or do anything other than sob, was completely gone. “Why is this happening to me?” was the only question I could ask during the “off” times. According to all the voices in natural health, I was doing everything… Read more »

Your Body is Mostly Water? Not Exactly

“Your blood is like a soup that needs to be seasoned just right. [Eat for Heat] helps to teach you what to watch for so you don’t screw up your “soup” by drinking too many fluids (which waters it down) or not seasoning it enough (with things like carbohydrates and salt).” ~Dr. Garrett Smith; Review of Eat for Heat: The Metabolic Approach to Food and Drink We often hear that our bodies are “mostly water.”  The rough approximation is that an average person with a relatively average amount of body fat will be composed of about 60% water.  Over the course of the lifespan, the percentage of body water gradually decreases.  This is often used as justification of drinking lots and lots of pure water as if doing so will… Read more »

Continuing with the last post on the symptoms of OVERHYDRATION, here is Sean Croxton and I talking on his Underground Wellness podcast about the dangers of fluid overconsumption.  Don’t forget to register to hear Sean and I talking again in the upcoming PALEO SUMMIT, which you can register for by clicking on the big box that is currently afloat in the sidebar off to your right.  Yeah, the one with the caveman falling off the side of a mountain haha. FYI, one of the things I mention in the podcast which is a particularly good example of the physiology behind the negative manifestations of the overconsumption of water, is this study showing that drinking water can induce seizures in infants.  And THIS Write up on it.  To listen, push the play button below. … Read more »

How Much Water Should YOU Drink?

By Matt Stone One of my greatest pet peeves when it comes to nutrition is the frequent use of blanket recommendations – many of them made on some theoretical basis, or made due to statistical probability (none of them particularly relevant to a real person living in the real world).  And I feel like, over the years, we at 180D have been picking through these one by one – especially now as we leave this sort of standard view of nutrition in the dust at an accelerated rate. These blanket recommendations really degrade what nutrition, or dietary manipulation, can be – which is an amazing medical tool. The food pyramid is a real travesty, and gives nutrition a bad name.  Dietary needs radically change – sometimes on an hourly basis.  Nutritional… Read more »
