I have not read those books, but I am planning on writing a short story/novella about this very subject. I suppose a lot of people do it because they are ill and have lost faith in the medical establishment. Some people do it in hopes of getting superhuman powers. Some people do it because, well, everybody else is doing it. In almost all cases it acquires a religious/dogmatic attribute.
