Just saw this story on Sarah Pope’s Healthy Home Economist blog about the oldest man in the world (right now), a 123 yo Bolivian. His main diet besides mutton and a special kind of mushroom consists of carby quinoa and barley. When younger, he raised and likely ate potatoes, beans, and oca, a native tuber. His drink is spring water from the Andes mountains. A shepherd, he doesn’t sit around but spends his time walking with his flocks. http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/worlds-oldest-person-ever-credits-traditional-diet-for-longevity/#more-12038
Wow! What a guy. Spent several months in Ecuador in 1997, including a lot of the rural mountain areas, which are similar to Bolivia but not quite as remote or high. Loved the Andean landscape and people. The mountain air can raise your appetite like nothing else!
