There are two types of people in software. Alpha testers, who break your app on purpose and file a 40-line bug report with screenshots. And beta testers, who break it by accident and just say “it’s not working lol” with zero context.
I have worked with both and honestly the beta crowd scares me more. At least the alpha folks are in a controlled environment where you expect things to catch fire. Beta is when real users find the one button combination nobody on the team ever thought to press, usually at 2 am on a Saturday.
Someone on my team shared this writeup on alpha vs beta testing recently and it does a good job explaining where each phase actually fits, so sharing here for anyone who keeps mixing the two up in meetings like I used to.
Anyway, my favorite bug report from a beta user remains “the app feels sad today.” Still not fixed. What is the weirdest feedback you have gotten from testers?
