ModeratorI just found this piece of information on Examine.com
Watching sexually arousing films (porn), or just being sexually aroused, can increase testosterone secretion in men[7][8] watching 4 minutes of erotica can also increase subsequent performance on a 3 rep squat.[9]

ModeratorThat’s why I like to work out with a mirror in front of me. Damn sexy…

Moderator@David- funny you mention that. I read recently that we perform beter athletically when we see ourselves. Taht’s partly why there are so many mirrors at gyms. Being able to visually compare ourselves to previous ‘mind’s eye’ versions of us can help us get that last little boost for another rep or what have you.

ModeratorInteresting. I often do feel stronger when working out in a gym with mirrors, and that sounds like a good explanation. I guess the best strategy for working out, per this thread, is to look at some porn and then watch yourself in a mirror. :)

ModeratorWell, I am going to be a nay-sayer here and probably piss somebody off. No gym worth its salt has mirrors in it, except maybe in the bathroom. If you’re doing real compound exercises, you need to concentrate on technique (especially if you’re doing cleans or snatches) and looking in a mirror isn’t going to help. It will harm. Try looking in a mirror while doing a heavy snatch and see what happens.
Whoops, I’m sorry. People who like to look in mirrors at themselves don’t go to gyms. They go to Fitness Centers.
After my gym closed, I went to Gold’s for a while and was subjected to the pretty-boy beauty-builders who preened in front of the mirrors rather than do heavy sets. What a bunch of self-absorbed little pussies!
I got to admit that was good for a few laughs. Obviously not definitive but this articlesuggests the opposite of what you do about mirrors. They are detrimental to motivation for a lot of people.
More to the point of the Erotica mention, I have to admit that there was one good thing at Gold’s. That was the Stair-master section. There were plenty of hot, scantily-clad Butt-thonged Goddesses whom I could watch as I warmed up. I could imagine The Real Amy among this platoon of beauties. No doubt raised my testosterone for my training session.

ModeratorHa, ha. I hear you, Thomas. When I was my strongest about eight years ago, I did my workouts at a small neighborhood gym without mirrors. There were very few distractions there (testosterone boosting or otherwise), and I worked hard. Now I’m exercising at a huge megaplex university “fitness center,” and I admit I don’t concentrate as hard on the heavy lifts, since I also spend a lot time with the sauna, swimming pool, climbing wall, air-conditioned track, etc. It’s not a powerlifter’s dream gym, but it sure is nice.
