You sound exactly like me Rebecca. My issues really caught up with me when I went on GAPS while nursing my second daughter because of her severe food allergies. I gain weight, get insomnia, and come down with mastitis when I am overly stressed. The phosphatidylserine used to help, but now it either does nothing or can actually seem to make the insomnia worse. I’m not sure why, but I know you’re not supposed to take it for too long. Thanks for the comment – it’s good to hear from someone else in the same boat.

If the phosphatidylserine makes it worse, then it’s probably a low cortisol symptom. It’s confusing, but I’ve definitely read the wake at 3am and can’t go back to sleep symptom as low cortisol, but then it seems like a lot of the same symptoms are associated with high or low and a lot of people are high sometimes and low at others, maybe even in normal ranges but higher at night and low in the morning so that they can’t fall asleep or wake up easily. I’ve read that licorice and grapefruit juice can raise cortisol. I’d be careful with high doses of licorice supplements, especially while breastfeeding, but maybe try grapefruit juice before bed? It may be worth getting the saliva tests 4 x in a day to see where you are.

I also have one child with severe food allergies. I thought about trying GAPS, but he’s soooooooo picky, and I couldn’t imagine trying to take away any of the foods he can eat and trying to force him to eat things he’s always refused like broth/soup. Did GAPS help reverse any of the allergies? My husband also has many food sensitivities and the list of things he won’t eat only gets longer, never shorter, it makes cooking and meal planning so difficult.

Thanks for the advice, Rebecca. Lots to think about. In answer to your question, yes, GAPS helped my daughter. She had nine different food intolerances/allergies and now all but her peanut allergy are gone. It also reversed my older daughter’s dairy allergy. It was hard, but worth it in the end. I know how it is to cook different meals with allergies in the family. I am so happy to only cook one meal now!
