ParticipantI’ve been eating for heat since about the end of February. I’ve had numerous benefits from doing this along with about 25 pounds of extra weight, on top of the 60+ I needed to lose in the first place!
My blood pressure has always been textbook normal – around 120/70 to 120/80. I check it at home from time to time because hypertension runs in my family, and I was on medication for it during my first pregnancy. I was shocked to see my blood pressure was nearing 140/90! I’m an RN so I check my own with my own cuff – so it’s not a malfunctioning machine.
I am assuming that as I continue to heal (after 30+ years of various weight-loss diets) that it will go back down away from that borderline hypertensive level. Or, do I need to go running to my doctor? I do not want to be on medication. Caffeine intake is small-moderate, 1 cup of coffee in the morning. Stress level is moderate but I feel like I’m handling it better since my metabolism is better. Sleep is pretty good. I’m more active as my energy levels slowly are coming up but I’m not “exercising” regularly… unless you can call housekeeping and caring for kids exercise!

KeymasterThere is often a rebound spike in blood pressure refeeding as well. If should follow a sort of bell curve. I would be surprised if it hasn’t returned closer to normal by the end of the year. Medicating it won’t necessarily fix the real biology lifting it up.

KeymasterThis post might be an interesting read on that subject…

ParticipantThank you Matt, I did read the Leningrad post earlier today while looking around for answers. It is really hot where I live right now too and that is probably putting a strain on me as I’m usually quite uncomfortable in the heat. Thank goodness for central air!
I’ll check it again sometime in the future but won’t worry or obsess over it… good to know that it’s a pretty normal response to refeeding.

ParticipantJust a quick update – blood pressure was a nice 115/71 this afternoon! Imagine that with a 25 pound weight gain on top of the 50+ pounds I really need to get rid of! It would make medical heads spin!

ParticipantOoooh! I had to go onto BP meds due to my ETF weight gain. My BP was spiking at over 160/111 and I was feeling really ill so I really had no alternative. I’m wondering if things would be normal now if I was off the meds? Will check with my doc…..very interesting!

ParticipantYeah, I wouldn’t stop taking them without your doc’s guidance but if you start feeling lightheaded or dizzy when you stand up, you may not need them anymore and I’d be in close communication with them about how you feel!

ParticipantStaying on meds for the time being as my BP is within normal range so I probably still need it unfortunately but this is really interesting
