I’m booking tickets to Bangkok. The cheapest option is via Istanbul, with a three-hour layover. My colleagues say that’s not enough time, and I might miss my connection. However, the airline sells this route as a single ticket, so they technically guarantee the connection. I want to save money because the price difference between this route and a direct flight is significant. However, getting stuck in Istanbul because the first flight is delayed and missing the second one isn’t ideal either.

I’d also like to know how the transfer process works. Do I need to collect and recheck my luggage, or will it automatically continue to the next flight? Does it make a difference if the flights are operated by different airlines? In my case, the first flight is with Turkish Airlines, and the second flight is with a different carrier.

I’ve flown like that a few times, too. If both flights are in the same terminal and the first flight isn’t delayed, three hours is normal. Once, though, the flights were with different airlines. At check-in, they told me that I had to pick up my luggage and check it in again. That took an extra forty minutes, and it really stressed me out. You can check the Istanbul International Airport (IST) website for information on connecting flights. With a connecting ticket, your luggage usually goes straight to your final destination. However, if the airlines are different, this rule might not apply, so it’s best to check with the airline in advance. Overall, the airport is large but easy to navigate, and you can walk from one gate to another in twenty minutes. Which terminal does your second flight depart from?
