I made the mistake of tossing a few debt collection letters last year, figuring they were just scare tactics. Then last week I got a call from Rausch Sturm and a formal notice in the mail. Something about it felt different, so I finally looked them up.

Turns out Rausch Sturm isn’t a typical collection agency — they are a law firm that sues people. Like, actually files lawsuits in your local court. And if you don’t file a written response by the deadline on the summons (usually 20-30 days), they automatically get a default judgment against you.

Once they have that judgment, they can garnish up to 25% of your paycheck and freeze your bank account. No warning. Just suddenly less money.

I am not saying ignore debt, but I wish I had known sooner that you have rights under the FDCPA. For example, you can send them a certified letter asking to verify the debt, and they have to stop collection until they prove it’s yours. Also, never agree to pay over the phone without a written settlement agreement first.

This article saved me from making things worse:

Has anyone successfully fought these guys or settled for less than the full amount? Feeling stressed and could use real stories.
