I’ve been going back and forth on this for a while, especially when looking at newer imports and daily drivers. On paper, manuals still seem “simpler” and therefore more reliable, but in 2026 most manufacturers have clearly doubled down on automatics especially CVTs and modern torque-converter setups.
From my own experience, manuals are forgiving and cheaper when something does go wrong, but I’ve also seen clutches wear out quickly in heavy traffic conditions. On the other hand, modern automatics feel smoother and more efficient, and when maintained properly they don’t seem as fragile as people used to say.
While browsing Japan auto cars for sale, I noticed a lot of newer Japanese models are automatic only now, which makes me wonder if reliability concerns are mostly outdated or still valid in real-world ownership.
I’m curious what others here are seeing mechanics, long-term owners, fleet users are modern automatics actually holding up better than expected, or do manuals still win when it comes to long-term durability and repair costs?
