ParticipantHi
I was wondering if anyone else notices a stronger heartbeat right after eating a high-carb meal. I notice it especially after eating more simple sugars like honey.
Is this a sign of my metabolism kicking in higher gear or should I worry:-)
Thanks!

ParticipantI have that too, usually paired with very uncomfortable feelings and then when i drink something or go walking/exercising it lowers a bit and my uncomfortable feelings simyltaneously disappear. I think in my case it also has to do with salt and possibly iron(which still is a mystery issue to me)

ParticipantI think that’s a common reaction to eating carbs when you’re insulin resistant, but I don’t know for sure. I struggled with it for quite some time. Ideally, that feeling goes away as you keep eating carbs.
I didn’t eat sugar or wheat for a long time, and when I did have those foods on very rare occasions, my heart would race uncontrollably for at least a couple of hours after, and yes, activity would make it go away. Before cutting those foods out, I’d get those reactions to pretty much any food I ate. Starting to eat very regular meals helped with that, I think it was due to adrenal fatigue.
I started eating muffins on a daily basis about 6 months ago and I had the heart palpitations for a little while before I got used to it.

Participantif anything i think it’s insulin super-sensitivity as opposed to resistance–I’ve only had this happen when coming back after periods of restricting carbs (or food in general), and you mention it occurring when you were not regularly eating wheat/sugar @rosajo

ParticipantI have this big time! I noticed it a few months after going Paleo. It got so bad I would nearly pass out after eating nearly anything. That’s when I picked up Diet Recovery II. It’s been a month since I’ve been eating whatever I want, but they have not gone away. Some days are good, some are not, I can’t figure it out.
I suspect there is a histamine intolerance piece to it however. I get dermatitis and itching skin when I eat high histamine foods- and palpitations are a common symptom. I definitely do better with low histamines, but then I get into the cycle of food phobia and restricting foods and then it’s just a mess. Jeezus what to do!!

ParticipantI finally figured this out. It’s potassium! I have adrenal fatigue from being too Low Carb for months. Adrenal fatigue causes the body to get rid of sodium, and then you’re potassium/sodium levels are out of balance. I have reduced potassium as much as possible and it’s made a huge difference. Palpitations are so much less- though not completely gone b/c potassium is just about in everything. It sucks b/c here I am having to drastically limit food again, but it’s worth it.
