ParticipantHello all,
I’m experimenting extreme PMS for the first time at 40. Lots of bloating, headaches, over the last 6 months. I’m on the pill. I have an appointment with my OB-Gyn in about a month. I am wondering: should I stop the pill? Is it that bad? Any input would be appreciated.

KeymasterA lot of women have extremely adverse reactions to birth control. Even the super low-dose versions. Most think taking the pill is like popping a vitamin C, but in communication with real, living, breathing humans I’d say birth control pills are some super hardcore shit guaranteed to cause problems of varying degrees of severity.

ParticipantWow thanks for the answer that was fast. I am reluctant to stop it because:
a) been taking it for 20 years!
b) got pregnant one month after stopping it twice in my 30s so doesn’t seam to play with my fertility
c) I have been reading about so many benefits, one being good at treating pms
d) don’t know how I’m going to replace itfor all these reason I am stuck..don’t know how to make a decision.
I should many give it a try just to see…I am really fearfull of any change + all the natural health books about perimenopause out there suggest lower carb meal plan…July 10, 2013 at 8:06 pm #8252Matt Stone
KeymasterAh, I thought you were saying you just started taking it and since have developed those problems. I see.
Make sure that you return to some of the basic fundamentals of health first. Sleep, stress, food, exercise. Most aren’t putting much into any of those but getting those right can eliminate a lot of problems, both minor and major.

ParticipantTHx I am working on that too. I have been on an intuitive eating path for a couple of month and definitly need rest.
I will test it and see.
On another note I am pretty sure my regular hormonal cycle takes over the pill (Alesse pretty low dose). I get periods 5 days before I stop the active pills and I ovulate and all…pretty funny, I am sure they don’t even know how the pill works with exactitude. It prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus and all but I am not so sure about stopping ovulation …just a observation

ModeratorBrigitte, I would wonder if you are starting to hit perimenopause? Especially if you think your hormonal systems override the pill. As someone who was on the pill for more than 15 years and then stopped, I can tell you I went through utter hell from which I am still recovering somewhat (2 years out). I will never go back on now and I am no fan of the pill, but I wonder if it’s more stressful for the body just to stay on after 20 years or to go off.

ParticipantAmy, what you just said is what my inner voice is telling me. I adhere to natural ways of eating and healing but somehow can’t stopped the pill…feels like I’m better on it. As for perimenopause, unfortunatly Yes I do think I’m getting into the ealy stages of symptoms…I will track symptoms and try some more regular sleep / eating Schedule…speeking of which…off to sleep :)

ParticipantAmy, I find it interesting that you are still recovering from having been on the pill so long. I’ve been off it for about 2 1/2 months and my body seemed to pick up right where it otherwise would have left off. Unless I’m so used to feeling like crap that it’s just normal and will continue to get better! ;) I don’t mean to derail the thread but I’m curious about what kinds of symptoms you had coming off it.
July 18, 2013 at 12:30 pm #9422The Real Amy
ModeratorMy symptoms included a loss of about 1/3 of my hair (grew back after 9 months), mild mood swings the first couple months (which is normal), massive acne (much better now, but I still experience somewhat), ovarian cysts (seem to be gone now), pain during intercourse (gone now), yeast infections (only at first), abnormal pap smears (which finally normalized). My cycle was regular the whole time so technically I’m a “success” as I have several friends who came off and have had awful problems with not ovulating, etc.
The other symptoms which may or may not be due to the pill is basically complete immune system collapse and feeling energy of a 70 year-old or worse for months on end (after that it rose to a more acceptable level, but my energy has only returned to normal in last few months, which I credit to homeopathy more than anything).
I think my situation is an interesting case for several reasons. 1) I was on BC for more than 15 years, and I think the length of use is really key, 2) I was doing my disastrous experiment with RBTI that summer after coming off and was not eating enough period (because I was trying to do stupid things like not eat meat or sweets after 2pm), and most importantly not having enough salt, and also min-col was crashing my blood sugar, 3) I had an insanely stressful summer at work, and 4) Due to an anaphylactic food allergy emergency (very stressful to the body in itself), I had to take steroids for several days. My entire body collapsed at that point, to the point that I could barely drag myself off the couch for months except to go into work (where my performance was sub-par, but thankfully my supervisors were understanding). I took tons of sick days. I got one illness thing after another, I went through all sorts of tests for things like epstein barr and lyme disease and really everything you can test for, and nothing showed up as being wrong. I rested a lot, and tried to eat well, and all of that helped eventually, but I was in a bad place for awhile. As of early 2012, I was at least functional and able to participate in social stuff again, and things improved from there. I was using homeopathy since Summer 2012, and noticed some improvements, particularly in the ovarian cyst area, but when I started a new remedy in April/May of this year, it was like a light came on and I could finally do things like exercise again and I felt like my normal self again.
So, anyway, I am pretty good now, although I continue to work on sleep and stress management, and I went through a heart-wrenching break-up recently (which affected my sleep and my cycle), but I guess other than the residual acne my body has adjusted fairly well at this point. Still feel just instinctively like it’s not 100% there, though, but I think I’ll get there soon. I wish I had never gone on the pill to begin with.

ModeratorOops, I will add just to summarize that I suspect I had the immune collapse because going off the pill was a huge stress on my body, and combined with those other factors it was just to much.

ParticipantWow, that sounds really miserable! I guess I should count myself as lucky – I was on the pill for 7-8 years (with maybe 6-12 months off in the middle at one point), then off it for a bit, then back on it for another 7 years or so, then off it to have my babies… while I was breastfeeding I was on the progesterone-only pill… then back on the regular pill when my second child turned about 3… she is 6 1/2 now and I’m off it again for good. Looking back I did have several breaks from the pill so maybe that was good for my body… I’m 44 now and not going to go back on it at all at this point. I plan to hit menopause head on with no hormones.
I’m glad you are feeling better. All of those things you mentioned sound like they were a definite strain on your body.. emotional stuff like breakups (it was work stress for me) really take a toll as well.

ModeratorThanks, yeah, it was sheer hell for awhile. In retrospect, it was probably a good character-building experience, but I wouldn’t wish it on another person. I’m just thankful that I recovered and it has made me a lot more appreciative of my life.

ParticipantI am reviving this thread! I finally took the plunge and stopped the pill on August 6th 2013. On October 7th I got my period back! I just got my period again this morning (Nov. 3th, 27 days later) which reminded me to share this on here just in case other women are wondering.
The reason I think it was so easy:
a) been on a refeed for 6 month, I had previously gained the pesty 10-12 pounds thru refeeding and was over it already. So I was already in a relaxed state when it comes to nutrition.
b) I was very very relaxed towards exercice as well.
c) I did not think about whether my period would come back or not, I just let it go, I told myself I would get blood test after 6 months if nothing happened.
For the record, I 41 y.o. 2 children, have been on the pill since I’m 22 .
I stopped the pill mainly because I was getting migraines every months. Migraines are completely gone. My mood is sooo much better, I sleep like a baby. I feel a lot less sugar/hypoglycemic swings. The only downside: some acne the week before, I hadn’t had acne for like 20 years! I feel like a teenager. But it’s just like 2 zits. I’m glad this month they are Under my chin, so almost hidden. I can totally live with that!
I encourage anyone who’s hesitating to quit to pill to give it a try.
Cheers
:)
