and i’ll leave you with the restaurant scene from “drunken master.” paying for lots of food is indeed the tough part. thank goodness for buffets!

another clip from “drunken master.” at the 7:23 mark, notice the special effort spent training a young man who would be considered overweight today.

yet he is not ridiculed, and there is no apparent pressure to make him lose body fat. could that be because such an appearance was considered normal at that age, or that it was a highly sought after physique at such an age for a future warrior, which only the rich could afford to support?

    but it’s not over until…

some say that the final singer featured, maria callas, severely weakened her voice halfway through her career, after giving in to pressure to lose too much weight too fast.

maria callas’ case is special. she was one of the first singers to suffer pressure from media like rock stars would, like elvis presley would (another good example of changing weight and voice), opera singers are fragile persons but she was simply hysterical. before TV, radio and internet, opera singers use to be fat people and that was ok with them, they didn’t care too much about their image because they had none in modern terms. callas’ reputation came more from her hysteria and her acquaintance with billionaires than from her talent. you had many gifted opera singers at the time who didn’t need to mutilate themselves to be able to go on their career.

i’ve never thought of extreme fat loss as mutilation, but i suppose it is. and i think there was a time when the preferred image for women was that of the opera singers, who were among the few to be in the public eye.

yes, maria callas seemed to be a deeply troubled person, and that is perhaps why every word she sang was filled with so much emotion.

i remember reading that her voice at a young age was very dark, and she worked hard to lighten it up…
