Why do authors keep giving female leads friends who clearly don’t support them? It’s confusing and frustrating as a reader. Is this supposed to feel realistic, or is it just an easy way to add tension?
I feel like this trope exists mostly to push the plot, even if it makes readers mad. A bad friend creates instant conflict without needing a villain. One of the books that really drove me crazy was My Alfa King’s Heart on My Passion — I felt bad for Adira so much because she deserved way better support. It reminded me of this: https://www.reddit.com/r/romancenovels/s/EHs60B7iz2 Sometimes it adds realism, but other times it just feels exhausting.
