Just wanting to know peoples’ thoughts and/or experiences on ED recovery from these two different standpoints.

If you’re not familiar with her site, Gwyn at Youreatopia advocates for a very high calorie, fast refeed for people with ED. No food is off limits, and definitely no purposeful exercise.

We probably all read Coldmember’s article, and it seems as though he advanced calories more slowly and stuck to certain types of foods, as well as incorporating exercise (correct me if I’m wrong).

The problem I have with Gwyn’s strategy is that at this point I refuse to stuff myself if I haven’t met a minimum, I just don’t think its beneficial. Coldmember’s strategy seems still too orthorexic to me, and I will never count calories again. Thoughts, experiences?

Maybee you could do an in between recovery? Do what feels right to you. I would at least aim for a minimum, but if you don’t reach it, don’t make yourself sick to get 2000 calories in in 2 minutes (if u get what I mean lol).

As far as exercise, again do what feels right to you. I would hold back on cardio, but light weights and low reps for lifting is okey. Okey as long as your body can handle it. Don’t force anything! If you think it will hold back recovery, don’t do it. If you have anorexia athletica, take a break, and then have someone you trust supervise you or something. Or make an exercise log.

Just some ideas, but I would like others input also.

Oh, and the go slow vs go fast… I went as quickly as I could to 2500. I lost weight when I upped my calories slower.

Thank you godschild! I guess I should’ve specified that I was just wondering what has worked for others, because I’m far enough into recovery that I kind of do what I want and don’t follow a certain approach. I eat what I want when I want and don’t deny my appetite or try to overeat. Anorexia athletica was never a problem for me…I hate exercise haha.

What approach did you take at the beginning?

I decided last August to stop the ED behaviors and went straight into intuitive eating. I don’t know if it was the best way to start recovery, but I didn’t relapse. I was still having some signs of low metabolism in January and decided to try eating Gwyn’s minimum of 3000 cal/day. It definitely helped resolve the last few problems I had, but the extra weight gain was so depressing. I only did that for part of January and February, because I got pregnant and couldn’t stomach eating that much anymore. I now eat how I think a non-disordered person would eat, and it works for me. I feel good (minus the usual pregnancy discomforts) and I can’t imagine ever counting calories again, not to restrict or meet a minimum.
