If you have gastritis with heartburn/GERD like I did, you don’t want to add HCL. Mine was brought on by a stressful time at work, which has now passed. I don’t have to take anything now, except for an occasional TUMS, not every day. I spent a year on a low-fat diet, which is frequently recommended, I got a little better. The Fast Tract diet is what got me off the meds. The diet is based on the author’s theory that SIBO often underlies heartburn, the gas is what brings the stomach acid up into the throat causing the burning.

The Fast Tract for Heartburn (Robillard) helped me. It is a lower carb diet. I just stayed with it for a couple of months. I got off the acid-reducing meds, which treat symptoms but make your digestion worse.

I also get a racing, pulsing feeling that interferes with falling asleep and staying asleep. I have taken my pulse at these times, and it isn’t my heart, it goes faster than my pulse. I’m trying progesterone. I’ve purchased both a cream, and the oil that Ray Peat recommends. I believe that results are not immediate, and I haven’t been using the cream long enough, haven’t tried the oil yet. An app for my Kindle called Deep Sleep Meditation has helped some.

I’m 59, struggling with sleep issues. Thanks to this site I’m eating more than I used to and loving it. I have always maintained a good weight, just thought I should be thinner but that was a cultural issue. I guess I thought I should always be a size 6 like I was when I was younger instead of the 10 I am now. My temp is still 97 in the a.m., maybe it was as low as 96 in the past. I had hoped that getting my metabolism going would help with the sleep.

Zoe, you may want to look at the Fast Tract for Heartburn diet, through Norm Robillard at the Digestive Health Institute. It is a lower carb diet, and enables you to figure out what foods are safer to eat. I followed it for a couple of months, and now I eat pretty much what I want. Any heartburn I have now is quickly relieved by a TUMS. Matt has written about SIBO, which is what this diet is dealing with. Now I can just focus on increasing my metabolism. It seems to be working: I gained just a couple of pounds, and I am eating a lot more, including ice cream most days. But my body temp hasn’t really risen much, so maybe that doesn’t happen for everyone?
